2
Check In Read Safety Rules Check items in lab and their conditions
Report items missing or broken
3
Lab End Clean Up Return equipment to proper places
Turn off all faucets and clean sinks Lock all drawers Close and lock all windows Turn off gas and ventilation switches
4
Intercom System Call Ask for help
Be patient. Do not leave laboratory during lab.
5
Breakage Reports Report all broken lab items
6
Check Out Check items in lab and their conditions
Report broken or surplus items
7
Chemical Management Ordering Chemicals Storage Handling Inventory
Transportation Waste
8
Ordering Chemicals Only order needed chemicals
Order least amount of chemicals needed Only order chemicals with available… PPE Handling Storage Fume hood ventilation Emergency consideration Disposal Do not accept a chemical without an identifying label
9
Chemical Storage Separate chemicals
Organize chemicals by hazard category and compatibility. All container labels should contain Chemical name Hazard Warnings Manufacturer name User name Date of order Date all incoming chemicals Date Peroxide-formers and store them away from heat and light
10
Chemical Storage All chemicals stored in secure rooms
Ignition chemicals in lab refrigerators Highly toxic chemical in secure area Cyanides must be stored in secure, ventilated area Hydrofluoric acid (HF) only in small amounts Ethanol only in small amounts and in secure area Flammable liquids in approved storage cabinets
11
Chemical Handling Handling chemicals information is in the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) … trinityrenewalsystems.com …
12
Chemical Inventory Chemical inventory of lab every year
Remove outdated chemicals Check labels and caps Update record
13
Chemical Inventory Report: Safety Chemical name Amount Location Cost
Wear PPE Use a chemical cart Use a step stool Be ready in case of an emergency
14
NFPA Classification System
RED – Flammability Hazard 4=rapidly burns 3=easily ignited 2=ignited by heat 1=preheated to ignite 0=will not burn BLUE – Health Hazard 4=lethal 3=serious injury 2=temporary injury 1=irritation 0=no hazard YELLOW – Instability Hazard 4=ready explosion 3=explosion upon heating 2=violent upon heating/pressure 1=unstable upon heating/pressure 0=stable WHITE – Special Hazard ACID= acidic COR= corrosive OX=oxidizing chemical W =violent with water ☢= radioactive
15
Transportation of Chemicals
Use a container when transporting chemicals Use carts with side rails to contain spills Separate bottles of liquid Do not use basket carts for liquids Do not overfill carts Avoid crowded paths Use empty elevator When transporting flammables, ground cart drum
16
Chemical Waste Use smallest possible waste containers
Chemical hygiene personnel will collect waste
17
Emergency
18
Injury Lab Injuries chemical splash on eyes
cuts chemical burns thermal burns Flush injury with cool water for 15 minutes Call for help chemical splash on eyes flush eyes in eyewash for 15 minutes Flush other areas of the body with safety shower. Remove clothing after running the shower. Reported all accidents to the Safety Director
19
Fire Alarm Immediately evacuate when fire alarm sounds
Extinguish all flames and turn off main gas switch when exiting the lab Do not use the elevator Be familiar with locations of Fire extinguisher Fire blanket Eyewash Safety shower
20
Latex and Chemical Allergies
Some have allergy to latex Ask Safety Director about allergy, or pregnancy uk.rs-online.com
21
Acid Exposure Place victim in Safety Shower. Flush for 15 minutes
Call for help Remove contaminated clothing. Evacuate the room. Cover the victim with a fire blanket classes.kvcc.edu
22
Emergency Procedures for Hydrofluoric Acid Exposure
Apply calcium gluconate gel, as directed is MSDS Inform Safety Director Seek medical help
23
Medical Emergency Cuts 1st degree burns
Call for help If big cut, flush with cool water to wash chemicals (15 minutes) 1st degree burns Flush with cool water for 15 minutes. 2nd degree burns (with blisters) and 3rd degree burns Do not wash with water Chemical burns Remove contaminated clothing safield.co.ug
24
Medical Emergency Action Plan
Unconscious Place victim on back and cover with blanket Do not move the victim Call for help Clean spill or broken glass Wait with victim If victim vomits, turn head Convulsions Remove harm near victim Do not stop the victim Chemical Ingestion Savel chemical and vomitus for medical analysis
25
Laboratory Equipment Learn how to use… Chemical Fume Hoods
Thermometers pH meters Centrifuges Balances Heaters Chemical Fume Hoods Turn on at the beginning of lab Align the hood with the ventilation duct Do experimental work in the hood
