Some rocks are called ores 3 Vocabulary: ores A mineral or a rock that has enough metal in it to make it worth mining

Most ores are found in beds with rocks of little value 4

But others are deep within the ground 5 Ore beds close to the surface are easy to mine

6 Some ores contain metals like iron and copper Metals are usually shiny substances

7 Iron and copper can transfer heat and electricity easily

Some metals can be pounded flat or pulled into wires without breaking 8 This means they are malleable

9 Vocabulary: malleable Easily hammered or shaped without breaking

Lead, gold, and aluminum are metals found in ores 10

Metal ores are important because so many products are made from them 11

From gold, we make jewelry and fillings for teeth 12

13 Lead is used to make pipe Copper is used to make wire

Aluminum is used to make airplanes, cans, foil, cooking pots, and motors 14

Iron is used to make steel 15 Which in turn we then can make stainless steel

16 Some ores contain minerals like sulfur and graphite

17 Sulfur is important because it is used in making medicines and fertilizers
