2 What is it? A South African policy of complete legal separation of the races Banned all social contact between blacks and whites beginning in 1910 Allowed the ruling white minority to control and terrorize the black majority This is all LEGAL from 1948-1991!!!

3 What does APARTHEID look like? What was it like for the majority of South Africans? What adjectives and feelings come to mind as we discuss this segregation?

5 All citizens were classified by race (LAW) All non-Europeans must carry a passbook issued by the white Government (LAW) Blacks were required to carry passes that determined where they could live and work. They could be asked for the passbook at any time.

7 Public beaches, swimming pools, restaurants, bridges, drive-ins, graveyards, parks, and public toilets were segregated (LAW) Race laws touched every aspect of social life, including prohibiting marriage between non- whites and whites (LAW)
