Organic Compounds
2
Element vs. Compound 1. Element
a) A substance made of one type of atom b) Examples: Hydrogen, Oxygen, Carbon 2. Compound a) A substance made when more than one type of element is joined together chemically b) Example: C6h1206, h20
3
Organic vs. Inorganic compounds
3. Inorganic compounds a) include salts, metals, substances made from single elements. b) any other compounds that don't contain carbon bonded to hydrogen. 4. Organic compounds a) Contain 2 or more elements b) Contain carbon C) Contain hydrogen, oxygen, phosphorous, nitrogen, and sulfur
4
Organic compounds 5. carbohydrates 6. lipids
a) Something formed with water such as carbon, hydrogen and oxygen b) Function: energy c) Can combine to form other compounds d) Make up cell walls in plants e) Examples: sucrose, cellulose a) Fats, waxes, oils and cholesterol b) Bonds with carbon, hydrogen and oxygen c) Function: energy d) Make up cell and nuclear membrane
5
Organic compounds 7. proteins 8. Nucleic acids
a) Carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen b) also Contain nitrogen and sulfur c) Function: chemical messengers, speed up reactions, make up muscle, transport substances like oxygen, help prevent infection d) Examples: keratin, collagen, testosterone, hemoglobin, and antibodies a) Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen b) Function: contain instructions that cells need to carry out all life functions c) Examples: DNA and RNA
6
All organic compounds 9. Are made up of the same elements: carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur 10. These elements can be combined in countless ways 11. These different combinations are what create the different groups of organic compounds

Organic Compounds 12. Write down 5 things you learned from the video.
It is entitled Organic Compounds and posted on Edmodo and Sophia.

13. How are organic compounds broken down in our bodies?
a) Cells perform chemical reactions which release energy from food b) Most chemical reactions need energy to drive them this comes from cellular respiration that happens in the mitochondria c) All animals get energy they need through cellular respiration: oxygen is combined with glucose (digested food) to form ATP (energy) d) Carbon dioxide and water are given off as a by-product e) All the activities carried out by a cell make up its metabolism

Cellular Respiration 14. Write down 5 things you learned from the video. It is called Cellular Respiration And it is uploaded to Edmodo and Sophia.
