1 All Living Things Can Reproduce......

2 FEMALE REPRODUCTION Main Structures Ovary Uterus Fallopian Tubes Vagina Cervix

3 OVARY  - this is where the eggs are produced through cell division (MEIOSIS)
- each ovary takes turns releasing eggs every month, twins occur if two eggs are released Ovaries secrete both estrogen and progesterone.  Estrogen is responsible for the appearance of secondary sex characteristics of females Progesterone regulates menstruation

4 An egg is usually a few days old before it implants in the uterus
An egg is usually a few days old before it implants in the uterus. At this point, it has already divided several times and is called a blastula.

5 The uterus consists of a body and a cervix
The uterus consists of a body and a cervix. The cervix protrudes into the vagina. The uterus maintains an environment for accepting a fertilized egg. The fertilized ovum becomes an embryo, attaches to a wall of the uterus, creates a placenta, and develops into a fetus (gestates) until childbirth.  If no fertilized egg reaches the uterus, the lining is shed monthly in a process known as menstruation

6 WORD BANK Fallopian Tubes Ovary Cervix Fallopian Tubes Vagina Ovary Uterus Uterus Cervix Vagina

7 Hormonal Regulation of Reproductive Cycle
*Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone (GnRH), secreted by the hypothalamus, controls the female reproductive cycle *Stimulates anterior pituitary to secrete Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) & Luteinizing Hormone (LH) *FSH & LH target the ovaries and drive the ovarian cycle (monthly changes in the ovary) *Estrogens and progesterone from the ovaries drive the uterine cycle (monthly changes in the uterus)

8 Phases of Ovarian Cycle
Follicular Phase FSH from anterior pituitary stimulates follicle growth Follicles grow into Graafian (mature) follicle Granulosa cells of follicle secrete estrogens and inhibin Ovulation LH stimulates rupture of the Graafian follicle and release of oöcyte from ovary into the pelvic cavity Fimbriae of Fallopian tube picks up the ovulated oöcyte

9 Phase of Ovarian Cycle Luteal phase (postovulatory phase)
LH stimulates egg development of Corpus luteum from ovulated or ruptured follicle Corpus luteum secretes mostly progesterone & some estrogens Progesterone prepares endometrium for possible pregnancy by increasing the thickness of the endometrium Ovulation Luteal Phase Days of cycle Follicular Phase Days 1-14 of cycle

10 Phases of Uterine Cycle
Proliferative phase Rising estrogen levels from the growing follicle stimulates growth of the functional layer of endometrium to 4-10 mm thickness Secretory phase Corpus luteum of ovary secretes progesterone Progesterone stimulates increased thickening of the functional layer of endometrium to mm Increased blood supply into the endomtrium occurs. Growth of endometrial glands and secretion of uterine milk

11 Phase of Uterine Cycle *Menstruation phase (menses)
Decline in progesterone levels causes functional layer of endometrium to discharge resulting in vaginal bleeding called menstruation *Marks the beginning of the next cycle

12 Summary of Ovarian and Menstrual Cycles

13 Negative Feedback Controls Cycle
If no pregnancy Increasing levels of progesterone cause negative feedback that inhibits LH secretion After about two weeks corpus luteum atrophies to corpus albicans (white body) Progesterone and estrogen levels decline Functional layer of endometrium discharged into first five days of next cycle

14 Pregnancy If fertilization occurs:- Embryo implants in endometrium
Must maintain levels of progesterone to maintain the endometrium and pregnancy Since corpus luteum secretes progesterone, it must be maintained LH normally maintains the corpus luteum, but LH is inhibited by high progesterone levels What maintains the corpus luteum during pregnancy? What was not present before?

15 Pregnancy *The outer part of blastocyst (the chorion) secretes the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) *hCG takes the place of LH and maintains the corpus luteum *After about 3-4 months of pregnancy, corpus luteum degenerates *Placenta now produces its estrogen and progesterone and maintains endometrium

16 Women should receive an annual PAP test
Women should receive an annual PAP test. A doctor removes cells from around the cervix and a lab checks them for abnormalities.

17 Female Cycles *Interesting fact – humans are one of the few animals that do not have some kind of visible obvious display of fertility. Evolutionary biologists suggest this trait evolved as a way to keep males interested for more than just the fertile period, increasing the likelihood of male parental care of offspring.

18 The fertilized egg (zygote) implants in the uterus
FERTILIZATION normally occurs in the Fallopian Tubes The fertilized egg (zygote) implants in the uterus

19 FERTILIZATION & PREGNANCY
Sperm must travel to the egg and penetrate to combine the DNA from both parents -- this creates the first cell after fertilization: the ZYGOTE 23 chromosomes from each parent; zygote has a total of 46 chromosomes

20 CONCEPTION Refers to the point at which the egg is fertilized
*Some believe life begins at conception* Conception can also be a verb Jane did not have trouble conceiving her first child. Bob could not conceive of a situation where he would need a parachute.

21 SEX DETERMINATION

22 If the zygote has the incorrect number of chromosomes, it may never start growing.  An extra chromosome #21 will result in the baby having Down Syndrome.

23 How does a woman know she is pregnant?
Missed period Changes in body, tenderness in breasts, nausea…etc Pregnancy test – tests urine for hormone levels

24 Clearblue Pregnancy Test

25 Fetal Development

26 Fetal Development

27 At the 8th week, the embryo is called a FETUS
At 8 weeks Embryo, approximately 8 weeks from conception

31 What Causes Morning Sickness?
It is likely hormones that rise rapidly with most incidences occurring in the first trimester Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG): This hormone rises rapidly during early pregnancy. No one knows how hCG contributes to nausea, but it's a prime suspect because the timing is right: Nausea tends to peak around the same time as levels of hCG. What's more, conditions in which women have higher levels of hCG, such as carrying multiples, are associated with higher rates of nausea and vomiting.

32 Fetal Tests     Ultrasound - sound waves are used to get an image of the baby You can tell the sex of the baby and its position

33 9 Weeks 6 Weeks 12 Weeks 6 Months 9 Months

34 Ultrasound Fetal Movement

35 Amniocentesis  &  Chorionic Villi Sampling
Tests fetal cells for abnormalities, such as chromosome numbers

40 Labor Contractions of muscles occur and become faster and faster, this timing can be used to predict the progression of the labor. Braxton Hicks contractions can occur throughout pregnancy, but probably more frequent at the end Dilation of the cervix allows for baby to pass through, the amount of dilation also is a good clue for how close baby is.

41 An epidural can be used to manage pain of labor
An epidural can be used to manage pain of labor.  A shot in the spine will temporarily eliminate any feeling below that point.  Mom is awake for the birth, but doesn't have the pain of it. Unfortunately, an epidural must be timed exactly right.  Too soon and it will wear off.  Too late, and they cannot do the procedure.

45 There are two types of incisions that can be made for C-section:
Transverse incisions are usually used on the lower part (which is also the thinnest part) of the uterus. It involves less blood loss, is easier to repair, heals well, is less likely to rupture during subsequent pregnancies and makes it possible for a woman to attempt a vaginal delivery in the future Vertical (classical) incision occurs at the top of the uterus. It provides a larger opening than a low transverse incision and is used in emergency situations, such as placenta previa, preterm and macrosomic fetuses, abnormal presentation, and multiple births. There is more bleeding and a greater risk of abdominal infection. This incision also creates a weaker scar, which places the woman at risk for uterine rupture in subsequent pregnancies.

46 Some women advocate for home births using midwives.
Babies aren’t so cute when they’re born – it’s a rough road to leave the womb Some women advocate for home births using midwives.

47

48 Some women opt to give birth in water.
This woman was waiting on the midwife and delivered when her husband went to answer the door.

49 Complications During Birth
Placenta Previa placenta is not attached to the top of the uterus, partially or fully blocks the cervix, this can cause bleeding during pregnancy Solution:  C-Section

50 What Is An Episiotomy? It is a surgical incision to open the perineum - the tissue between the anus and vagina. It is performed during the second stage of labor when the baby is being pushed through the vagina. The purpose of the procedure is to avoid tearing the delicate perineal tissue.

51 BREECH BIRTH (Footling)
If the baby is rear or feet first, it is called a BREECH BIRTH.  Doctors will attempt to turn the baby or even do an emergency C section.  Breech births are dangerous for baby because the head can get stuck or umbilical cord gets tangled. Solution:  turning the baby before delivery, C-section, or footling birth

52 Ectopic Pregnancy Fertilized egg attaches (or implants) someplace other than the uterus, most often in the fallopian tube. (sometimes called a tubal pregnancy.)  The pregnancy cannot continue to term, usually embryo is removed. Can be very dangerous for woman.

53 Gestational Diabetes Pregnancy hormones can block insulin from doing its job. When this happens, glucose levels may increase in a pregnant woman's blood.

54 Problems with Getting Pregnant
Fertility clinics can assist with family planning In Vitro Fertilization  (IVF) involves the removal of egg and fertilization in a petri dish, then transferring one or more fertilized eggs back into the uterus (once called test-tube babies) Specialists can also offer advice with improving fertility without invasive procedures

55 Permanent Options… Vasectomy Tubal Ligation
