NbTi undulator insulation Nb3Sn insulation for NED/Short Model Coils Requirements for Nb3Sn undulator Proposed materials Results of trials Project plan

NbTi insulation The existing undulator relies on polymers and a conventional scheme: -to form a ribbon -vacuum impregnation with epoxy to form a monolithic structure

Nb3Sn insulation for NED Heat treatment step rules out organic materials. NED followed two routes: -”conventional”, RAL Glass fibre, with low % organic “sizing”; HT; VI with epoxy -”innovative”, Saclay patented ceramic insulation challenging to get high modulus

Draft Nb3Sn undulator insulation specification Wire insulation -thickness 0.075mm -electrical withstand 500V -mechanical strength... -resistant to abrasion during winding -radiation resistance... -process compatible with wire heat treatment

Proposed materials Glass fibre + epoxy Wire is available with S-glass fibre braid (with as-yet unknown organic content) Wet-wound ceramic eg Aremco pyro-putty Short working life is an issue. If porous enough, an impregnation with epoxy might be worthwhile to increase toughness and strength
