2. We have used running water as an energy source for thousands of years. The first house in the world to be lit using hydro-electricity was in Northumberland, England in 1878. El Pont de Suert is located in a mountainous area where, from 1950, many hydro-electric power stations were built, being the most important economic source for the local people. Nowadays there are many hydro-electric power stations, providing around 20% of the world's electricity. The name comes from "hydro", the Greek word for water. Hydroelectricity is a renewable energy source !
