Reading an element box The atomic number indicates the number of protons in the nucleus. Atomic Mass = mass of protons + neutron + electrons - Each element has a different amount of protons.

The horizontal rows of the Periodic Table known as periods. Periods As you move from left to right the atomic number is progressively larger.

Elements in same vertical column. members have similar characteristics. Groups or Families

The elements are divided into 3 types. metals, non-metals, and metalloids Most elements are metals.

Metals. - Located on left side and center of the table. ( except for Hydrogen)

Properties of metals: - Metals are good conductors. - Metals have a shiny appearance. - Metals are malleable (Can be shaped) - All metals are solids except mercury.
