3 MAUS VOCABULARY Genocide: mass murder of a specific group of people in a region Holocaust: The event of 6 million jews that were murdered during wwII. The genocide was conducted and lead by Adolf Hitler and nazi Germany. Propaganda and Persuasion: Ethos : appeal to ethics Pathos: appeal to emotions Logos: appeal to logic

4 PERSUASION ETHOS “As a doctor, I am qualified to tell you that this course of treatment will likely generate the best results.” PATHOS “ If we don’t move soon, we’re all going to die!” LOGOS The data is perfectly clear: this investment has consistently turned a profit.

5 VOCABULARY CONTINUED Dehumanization: Treating a person below standard: like an animal, or something that is less than human. Allegory: an extended metaphor Metaphor: comparing two unlike things Symbols: objects that represent ideas Imagery: word pictures: what you see, hear, taste, smell, and touch. Humanity: the human race

6 VOCABULARY CONTINUED Graphic Novel: a “comic book” style story with novel characteristics. Frame narrative: a story within a story. Juxtaposition: the fact of two things being seen or placed close together with contrasting effect Diagrams: descriptive pictures

7 LAST SLIDE FOR VOCABULARY Survivor’s guilt: feelings of guilt for having survived a catastrophe in which others died. Anti-Semitism: discrimination against or prejudice or hostility toward Jews. Autobiography: a person telling his/her life story. Biography: someone else telling a person’s life story.
