1 Welcome! Please get out a writing utensil and a piece of paper. Start thinking about the following question and be prepared to write down answer when bell rings and share as class. What do you know about migrant workers?

2 Share your ideas! Remember to be respectful of other’s answers It is okay if you are wrong, we will all learn together and from one another If you do not feel comfortable sharing your answer out loud, turn to a partner and share. You must pick one option from both to share to the class.

3 What is a migrant worker? Definition: Term used to call laborers who travel from place to place harvesting crops. Normally immigrants from Mexico, can be from other countries. Paid under minimum wage and will live on the farm that are working on. Works long hours. Has a guest worker visa and only in the United States to work.

4 Migrant Workers Today Do you think that migrant workers get treated the same way as they have in the 1960’s? Why? –Share with a partner next to you. In the handout given, read the background on the first page and pick 1 of the three stories to read. Once finished, write down 2 to 4 points you found stood out the most to you. Share 1 point out with the class.

5 Reaching Out by Francisco Jiménez Background: Born in 1943 in Tlaquepaque, Mexico Family were all migrant workers Second oldest child out of nine Started working at age 6 and was deported in 8 th grade with his family. Came back legally Had no permanent home in California

6 Time to read Volunteers! We will read through chapters 1 – 5. Pages 1 – 51. What we do not get done will be homework!

7 Opinions? What do you think of the novel so far? How about how him and his family are treated? Do you see any similarities between his family and of the story of either Juan, Ricardo or Norma? Share with partner and be prepared to share out to class.

8 Before you leave… Get out a piece of paper and write your name and date. This will be turned in on your way out. Answer the following question: What would you decide if you were in Francisco’s place? Would you go to college or stay and help pay bills? Please write until bell rings. Turn into me at the door.
