1
Gathering Weather Data SWBAT recognize the importance of accurate weather data; describe the technology used to collect weather data; analyze the strengths and weaknesses of weather observation systems
2
Surface Data What 4 atmospheric variables do meteorologists measure to predict weather? –Temperature –Air pressure –Wind –Relative Humidity
3
Surface Data Thermometer –Used to measure temperature Barometer –Measure air pressure Anemometer –Measure wind speed Hygrometer –Measure relative humidity Ceilometers –Measure height of clouds and estimates cloud cover
4
Upper-Level Data Radiosonde –Sensors that measure temperature, air pressure, and humidity in the upper levels. –Sent up on a balloon to record data.
5
Weather Radar Doppler Effect –A change in the wave frequency that occurs in energy, such as sound and light, as it moves toward or away from an observer.
6
With a partner Based on what you have read, determine the strengths and weaknesses of weather observation systems. Discuss it with a partner and record your ideas.
7
With a partner Answer questions 1-5 on page 316. Be sure to answer in all questions in complete sentences. If you don’t finish in class, complete for homework.
