WEATHER I Wind http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzSqhrn2dDM
2
WIND Caused by air pressure and temperature differences. Moves from H to L Horizontal movement of air http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCLwbqmacck
3
WIND/WEATHER HAPPENS BECAUSE OF…
4
HOW DO WE MEASURE WIND? Anemometer- tool used to measure wind speed. Cups catch the wind and record speed.
5
LOCAL WINDS- WINDS OVER A SHORT DISTANCE (Land/Water) heats faster _________ (denser molecules) As land heats the air rises and colder air comes in to replace it. Sea Breeze- breeze coming from ocean/water to land (during the day) Land Breeze- winds moving from land to water (generally in evenings)
6
MONSOON - Land and Sea breezes that change direction with the seasons. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0lTfJDiZsw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RD5I9UhbRgg
7
GLOBAL WINDS- STEADY WINDS FROM A LONG DISTANCE AND SPECIFIC DIRECTION. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GvXPtQuQtiU Caused by temperature changes between the poles and equator. Seasonal changes (amount of sunlight and heat) at various locations affect global winds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vp_1gK9139E
8
CORIOLIS EFFECT- GLOBAL WIND CURVE CAUSED BY THE ROTATION OF THE EARTH http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2mec3vgeaI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pb69HENUZs8
9
JET STREAM- BANDS OF HIGH SPEED WINDS IN THE STRATOSPHERE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huweohIh_Bw

BEAUFORT WIND SCALE
12
BEAUFORT SCALE ASSIGN Obj: Create/Design your own version of the Beaufort scale. You must have a title for your scale (2 pts) You must have a range of numbers (at least 5) (2 pts) You must include a wind speed category (2 pts) You must include an observation category (2 pts) You must include a colored picture for each category of wind speed (4 pts) Neatness/organization of design (2 pts) Bonus points will be awarded for highly artistic or creative scales. *A theme might be a great way to earn some bonus points!
13
CANIS WIND SCALE Wind scaleWind speed (mph)DescriptionPicture 0Under 1 mphNo movement of dog fur, ears at rest 11-5 mphSlight movement of fur 26-10 mphLight flapping of ears with breeze 311-15 mphEars flipped back due to wind, fur rustling across body

WEATHER II- PRECIPITATION Water evaporates into the air from water surfaces and living things It returns to the surface as Precipitation Warmer air can hold more moisture Clouds condense to form drops http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBnKgwnn7i4
15
ASSIGNMENT YOU are a drop of water…(you can be wherever you want)…Write a diary describing your journey through the water cycle. How do you become a cloud? What type of conditions cause you to fall as precipitation? What form of precipitation are you? ½-1 pg. BE creative, and descriptive. This can be funny or serious…you decide. You have 15-20 minutes! Be prepared to share. *Use pg. 545 to help you.
16
Precipitation- any form of water that falls from clouds and reaches the surface. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SesRrocIFtc
17
PRECIPITATION CAN COME IN MANY FORMS
18
HOW DO WE MEASURE RAIN? Rain gauge- tool used to collect and measure rainfall Ruler- tool used to measure snow
19
RAIN SHADOW Windward side gets rain as clouds lift to go over mountains. Leeward side is generally dryer
20
ASSIGNMENT 1) Read pgs. 551-554 in the red book 2) Take notes on the various forms of precipitation (rain, sleet, freezing rain, hail and snow.) Add these to your existing notes on precipitation.
21
WEATHER III (HUMIDITY, CLOUDS) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GS5jl4nLek Humidity- amount of ___________________ in the air Warm air can hold more water than cold air (it’s less dense) moisture This is what we are doing for our lab! PAY ATTENTION
22
SPECIFIC HUMIDITY Amount of moisture in the air Warmer air holds more moisture
23
RELATIVE HUMIDITY Comparison of specific humidity to maximum amount of that the air can hold.
24
PSYCHROMETER Tool used to measure humidity. It compares air temp of a dry bulb with the temp of a wet bulb.
25
CLOUDS High fog, mist or haze Cloud shapes relate to air movement ----- Stratiform Cumuliform http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGTSNYF8qIk WARNING…this might bring a tear to your eye…clouds are beautiful.
26
3 TYPES OF CLOUDS 1) Cirrus- thin, feathery, very high altitude; made of ice crystals 2) Cumulus- thick, puffy, rising air (usually warm) vertical air 3) Stratus- low sheets of clouds, layers, horizontal air http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMagDRCpJ14
