40 questions in 35 minutes Calculators may not be used SCIENCE TEST
2
Measures skills required in the natural sciences: Interpretation Analysis Evaluation Reasoning Problem Solving SCIENCE TEST
3
Content Biology Chemistry Physics Earth/space sciences SCIENCE TEST
4
The test emphasizes scientific reasoning skills over recall of scientific content, skill in mathematics, or reading ability. SCIENCE TEST
5
The questions require you to: recognize and understand the basic features of, and concepts related to, provided information examine critically the relationship between information provided and conclusions drawn or hypotheses developed generalize from given information and draw conclusions, gain new information, or make predictions SCIENCE TEST
6
Questions in 3 different formats: 38% Data Representation graphs, tables, and other schematic forms 3 passages, 5 questions each 45% Research Summaries descriptions of one or more related experiments 3 passages, 6 questions each 17% Conflicting Viewpoints several related hypotheses or views that are inconsistent with one another 1 passage, 7 questions SCIENCE TEST
7
Data Representation (38%) graphic and tabular material similar to that found in science journals and texts measure skills such as graph reading, interpretation of scatterplots, and interpretation of information presented in tables, diagrams, and figures SCIENCE TEST
8
Research Summaries (45%) descriptions of one or more related experiments questions focus on the design of experiments and interpretation of experimental results SCIENCE TEST
9
Conflicting Viewpoints (17%) presents several hypotheses or views that, being based on differing premises or on incomplete data, are inconsistent with one another questions focus on understanding, analysis, and comparison of alternative viewpoints or hypotheses SCIENCE TEST
10
Passages appear in no particular order. All passages contain data presented in paragraphs, tables, and/or graphs. All passages include written introduction to, or explanation of, the presented data. SCIENCE TEST
11
Tips for Taking the ACT Carefully read instructions on cover of the test booklet. directions for each test. each test question. SCIENCE TEST
12
Tips for Taking the ACT Pace yourself — don't spend too much time on a single passage or question. Pay attention to the announcement of five minutes remaining on each test. SCIENCE TEST
13
Tips for Taking the ACT Use a soft lead No. 2 pencil with a good eraser; do not use a mechanical pencil, ink pen or correction fluid. Answer the easy questions first, then go back and answer the more difficult ones. SCIENCE TEST
14
Tips for Taking the ACT On difficult questions, eliminate as many incorrect answers as you can, then make an educated guess among those remaining. Answer every question. Your scores on multiple-choice tests are based on number of questions you answer correctly. No penalty for guessing. SCIENCE TEST
15
Tips for Taking the ACT Review your work. If you finish test early, go back and check your work. Mark your answers neatly. Erase any mark completely and cleanly without smudging. SCIENCE TEST
