 Difference is ageism can be benevolent whereas Elder abuse is always a negative thing  Ageism is an umbrella term for all age related abuses both young and old  Elder abuse always refers to senior citizens

 Takes many forms: physical abuse, mental abuse, exploitation, neglect, or abandonment are all forms of elder abuse

 There have been numerous studies done on ageism however hard data is nearly impossible to come by due to conflicting reports  Reason for the inaccuracies is because of how unique ageism is: it is the only prejudiced that you both grow into and out of

 Much easier to identify and stop than ageism  In every 1000 people over the age of 60, 4 of them report elder abuse  There may even be up to 10 additional unreported cases for every 1000 people

 The church would say that elder abuse and ageism are wrong and need to be stopped because every person has inherent dignity

 Exists due to our culture’s fascination with youth and how completely our culture abhors aging and getting older
