IEEE CS SAB, March 2009 For Computer Society Internal Use Only 1 S2ESC Report Standards Activities Board Meeting March 20, 2009 Submitted by Paul Croll

IEEE CS SAB, May 2008 For Computer Society Internal Use Only 2 IEEE Software and Systems Engineering Standards Committee (S2ESC) Terms of Reference –Codify the norms of professional software engineering practices into standards. Promote use of software engineering standards among clients, practitioners, and educators. Harmonize national and international software engineering standards development Forty+ Standards in Software and Systems Engineering

IEEE CS SAB, May 2008 For Computer Society Internal Use Only 3 S2ESC Liaisons Active liaisons with: –ISO/IEC JTC1/SC7 –ASQ Software Division –Software Engineering Institute (SEI) –US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) –IEEE Reliability Society –IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society –International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE)

IEEE CS SAB, May 2008 For Computer Society Internal Use Only 4 Standards Products VuSpec Software Engineering Standards Collection –2009 update in progress Standards for Students –In collaboration with IEEE-SA –A specially-priced collection of software and systems engineering standards for students –The life cycle framework standards 12207 (Software) and 15528 (Systems) + core supporting standards + the SWEBOK

IEEE CS SAB, May 2008 For Computer Society Internal Use Only 5 Small Business Study Group - 1 Understand: –How do small businesses use IEEE and other software standards? –Why do small businesses (and large businesses) not use the standards? –How should standards be tailored to support the infrastructure available in small businesses? –How can (and why should) small businesses contribute to the development of standards? –How can a firm advertise compliance to a standard? Act: –Inform small businesses of the benefits of using IEEE Software Standards –Inform IEEE about the potential market that is not being serviced by the current approach

IEEE CS SAB, May 2008 For Computer Society Internal Use Only 6 Small Business Study Group - 2 Target Market –Revenue By Firm Size (for Professional, Technical, and Scientific Firms*) SizeRevenue% of Firms 0-499809k99.66% 0-19408k87.87% 0177k 1-4242k55.31% 5-9726k20.35% 10-191,502k12.21% 20-994,535k10.10% 100-49921,282k1.69% 500+150,276k0.34% *Data for NAICS codes 541XXX

IEEE CS SAB, May 2008 For Computer Society Internal Use Only 7 Standardization For Medical Informatics - 1 Healthcare Information Systems (HCIS) Study Group –Standards for the US healthcare information network (NHIN) –S2ESC is registered as a Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP) SDO member ANSI subcommittee working for the Department of Health and Human Services www.ANSI.org/HITSPwww.ANSI.org/HITSP –Coordination with other CS and IEEE standards committees and relevant Societies EMBS – Elliot Sloane, Todd Cooper RS – Lou Gullo –Chair, Rebecca Smith, President of RebL systems, formerly of HP, currently working with the UCSF Medical Center

Standardization For Medical Informatics - 2 Identified (first pass) IEEE Health Informatics Standards not currently integrated with Software and Systems Engineering Standards Gaining access to other IEEE Societies [e.g. Medicine & Biology society - Medical Informatics and Computer-Based Medical Systems]- to ensure all areas are identified so that we can better position ourselves. Initiated mapping of existing, relevant IEEE Standards to Health Informatics functions. Began IEEE 11073 Collaboration Next Steps –Identify an Initial Set of S2ESC Standards, most likely those needed to achieve SEI/CMMI-Level 2 –Create descriptive summaries of identified Standards that show their value to practitioners –Create an overview of the value of S2ESC standards to software development organizations, integrators and end users in the healthcare industry IEEE CS SAB, May 2008 For Computer Society Internal Use Only 8

IEEE CS SAB, May 2008 For Computer Society Internal Use Only 9 Standardization for Systems Integration New effort just starting in Standardization for Systems Integration –Recommended practice –WG Chair is Dr. Rashmi Jain, Stevens Institute, NJ
