1 James Monroe Monroe was born in Virginia in 1758 and he died in 1831. Monroe was the fifth president of the United States, serving as president from 1817 to 1825.

2 Served As a young man James Monroe served in the military under Commander-in-Chief George Washington. Monroe was a member of the Continental Congress from 1783 to 1785. British General Cornwallis surrendered to George Washington in 1781, ending the American Revolution.

3 Served, cont. He was elected a Senator from Virginia in 1790. He helped negotiate the Louisiana Purchase. He served as Secretary of State and Secretary of War for James Madison during the War of 1812. War of 1812 The United States fought the British!

4 President Monroe won election to the presidency easily both times he ran for office. He was so popular that he was unopposed when he ran for his second term as President in 1820. Monroe for President! Vote for Monroe! Elect Verses: No one!

5 National Pride-- Nationalism The time of Monroe’s Presidency was called The Era of Good Feeling because there was a strong sense of national pride and cooperation. Monroe was highly respected. –Thomas Jefferson said, –“Monroe was so honest that if you turned his soul inside out there would not be a spot on it.” Character Counts!

6 Foreign Policy James Monroe followed the foreign policy that George Washington recommended in his “Farewell Address” in 1796. –Washington urged (advised, warned) America to stay out of European affairs and not take sides with European countries, that is, to remain neutral. James Monroe, however, extended (added to) Washington’s Policy by telling the European countries to stay out of the Western Hemisphere. 7 New Territory During the Presidency of James Monroe the United States acquired (got) the Florida Territory from Spain in 1819. At that time many Latin American countries were fighting for their independence from Spain.

8 Supported Independence of Latin American Countries James Monroe did not want the European countries to send armies to help Spain re- gain its colonies that had achieved independence. Monroe also wanted the European countries to stop trying to make colonies in the Western Hemisphere.

9 Actions that James Monroe did: In 1822 Monroe recognized the independence of many Latin American countries. In 1823 Monroe announced the Monroe Doctrine stating that the U.S. wanted to keep the European Countries out of the Americas. “The U.S. says, ‘Yes’ to Mexico’s Independence! ” “We will protect the free Latin American Countries from the European Nations and their armies!”

10 The Monroe Doctrine said: The U.S. would try to stop (oppose) any attempt by European countries to establish new colonies in the Americas (Western Hemisphere). The U.S. would try to stop (oppose) any European country that wanted to re-conquer a country that gained independence. Monroe said that the U.S. would not interfere in colonies that were still under European rule, like Cuba and Canada. “No new Colonies” American Countries, north and south, will stay free!

11 Results of Monroe Doctrine (Impact) As a result of the Monroe Doctrine, the independence of the new Latin American countries was protected. This policy became a key part of the foundation, the cornerstone, of U.S. Foreign Policy toward the nations of Latin America and Europe. Protection Safety A cornerstone is the foundation that joins two walls.
