Cells – Cell division Lesson 5
2
LO- Level 3 – to state why we grow Level 4 – to draw a flow diagram of cells dividing Level 5 – to explain how cells divide Level 6 – to explain why only one cell becomes specialised

Keywords Growth Cell division Chromosmes Parent cell Daughter cell Specialization Enlarge
5
1.Draw lines from the words to the correct part of each cell. The words can be used more than once or not at all.
6
2Draw lines from the parts of cells to their functions. The first one has been done. Controls the cells activities Produces energy for the cell Mitochondria Cell vacuole
7
Growth Growth is needed for organisms to become larger. Clip – cell division
8
Growth = cell + cell division enlargement
9
Cell division Parent cell Chromosomes in the nucleus replicate and move to either end of the cell. Cytoplasm pinches together and the cell membrane fuses. Two daughter cells are produced, which are identical to the parent cell One cell enlarges in size and remains able to divide. One cell enlarges in size and specializes, changes structure to carry out a specific function. Example – skin cell.
10
Cell division Skin cells are continually lost. To make new cells the body carries out cell division Cells divide where the body needs to: Grow Replace worn out cells Repair damaged tissue
