2010 Census U.S. Census counts every resident in the U.S. Takes place every ten years Data collected by the census determines representation in U.S. House of Representatives and used to allocate more than $400 billion in federal funds to local communities 74% of all U.S. households participated in the 2010 Census The most massive participation ever witnessed according to the Census Bureau

Population The Region’s population has increased almost four-fold since 1970 Largest % growth – 69.8%Largest absolute growth – 416,878

Race Black population has increased from 13.8% to 17.0% White population decreased from 83.8% to 76.8% Population describing itself as belonging to two or more races up from 1.5% to 5.2%

Ethnicity In 2000, race and Hispanic origin treated as two separate concepts by Census Significant increase in Hispanic population – 11.1 to 17.5 %

Age Region is getting older Reflects positive net migration of older age cohorts into Region Huge increase in 85+ age cohort Highest median age – 57.3
