Research task 1 By Rhys Funnell

Genre  In French genre means ‘kind’ or ‘sort’ which in film is used to define what genre the film is for example thriller, horror, comedy etc. each genre has certain components that helps the audience understand what the genre of the film is.

Thriller genre  Things mostly expected in the thriller genre of films is a single minded goal for example trying to capture a killer or trying to solve a mystery. They have a lot of cliff-hangers in them which leaves you thinking what is going to happen next and the plot often builds up to something stunning that you usually wouldn’t expect for example in se7en at the end summerset picks up a box but you don’t get too see what's inside but you have the sense it’s a bad thing.

Thriller expectations  People when watching thriller films expect to be thrilled (self explanatory), suspense (so it leaves you on the edge of your seat), action (as in most films action always makes a film more fun and enjoyable), fear (in thriller usually a fear of the unknown), excitement (so it gives them a reason to watch more), tension (people like build ups with something surprising or maybe a twist at the end) mystery (so that they have something to think about) and like too be left on the edge of their seats to see what happens!!

A brief history of the thriller genre  Thriller is a genre of film, programmes, and likes to build tension and have a lot of suspense in it and most of all an element of excitement. In thriller films they try to play with your emotions whether its developing fear or sadness etc. most of the time it consists of uncertainty, anxiety and surprise and usually gets the adrenaline pumping!

Hybrids and Sub genres  Hybrids are when genres cross with each other for example romantic comedies or comedy horrors etc. which have more than one set of elements in it. Sub genres are for example thriller/suspense, supernatural, super-heroes etc. which are genres within a genre so super-heroes would be like a thriller film about a superhero.

Narrative conventions  Narrative conventions consist of the point of view its in, the characterisation of individual characters, the plot of the film, the time its set etc.

Character representation  Different characters are represented differently for example in se7en brad Pitt and Morgan freeman were portrayed as the heroes/good guys of the film who were trying to do the right thing whereas the character ‘john doe’ was portrayed as the villain the character that the heroes were trying to capture and therefore was considered the bad guy of the film.

Mise – en – scene  Mise – en – scene is one of the most important things of film it is all about the set and what is going on for example Mise – en – scene consists of: the setting, props, costume/make up, figure expression and the lighting/colour all of this is what sets the scene of the film and what basically decides what the film and characters are going to look like through the film.

Bibliography  During this research I referred to Wikipedia and my previous notes that we worked on in lesson about mise – en – scene, genre, characterisation etc. to help me complete the research.
