DEFINITION Progressivism: Reform movement of the late 1800’s and early 1900’s concerned with curing problems of urbanization and industrialization

DEFINITIONS CONTINUED In your notes define: Reform - make changes in something in order to improve it. Urbanization – A population shift from rural to urban areas Industrialization – A period of social and economic change that transforms a human group from an agricultural society into an industrial one

WHY PEOPLE WERE ANGRY: Issues in the workplace: Poor working conditions Dangerous workplace – lack of safety High accident rates Between 1907-1910 a steel mill in Pittsburg had 25% of its workforce injured or killed on the job Long hours 70% of American industrial laborers worked an average of 54 hours a week

SOCIAL PROBLEMS Widening gap between the rich and the poor Over-crowded cities High poverty rates

EXPOSING THE ISSUES Progressive journalists, known as “muckrackers” helped to spread the reform message in popular newspapers and magazines Exposed issues such as: Child labor Slums Corruption (politics and business)

LABOR UNIONS The progressive movement led to the advent of labor unions Fought to change how workers were treated Examples: AFL: American Federation of Labor Members were skilled laborers Led by Samuel Gompers ILGWU: International Ladies Garment Workers Union IWW: Industrial Workers of the World
