Regulates the environmental effects of coal mining in the United States(particularly the effects of strip mining) Act consists of two programs-one for regulating active coal mines and one for reclaiming abandoned mine lands Regulates mines by requiring mining facilities to reduce hazards for the environment, wildlife, and the people Created the Abandoned Mine Reclamation fund to maintain surface mines This law helps cut down on pollution and environmental contamination(specifically from coal sludge spills which have killed people, contaminated nearby waters, and killed aquatic life)

Regulated by the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement This office is a branch of the U.S Department of the Interior
