Wellbeing Outcomes for work with children in Edinburgh EVOC Children, Young People and Families Network 3 September 2015 Donny Scott
2
Why develop wellbeing outcomes? Getting it right for every child – “Wellbeing Indicators” – very broad domains Need intermediate outcomes – that can “bridge” to specificity of child’s situation Safe Healthy Active Nurtured Achieving Respected Responsible Included
3
Why develop wellbeing outcomes? In working with a single plan: – Focusing on outcomes – and developing relevant tasks – Help in developing shared understanding between practitioners and family and among practitioners – Ability to track progress Reviewing progress for children across a workload – or across a service. Potentially – contributing to commissioning of services.
4
Note: this is a draft – under development.
5
How the outcomes are used Assessment Identification/Prioritisation of Issues (a small number) Align priority issues to outcomes with scores Add outcome scores and tasks to child’s plan Monitor progress with scores
6
This is consistent with the Getting it Right practice model And helps to bring outcomes centre stage
8
Example Degree of Wellbeing Low -----> -----> -----> -----> High 1 2 3 4 5 Outcome (ACHIEVING): “ I am learning new things ” What lowest wellbeing might look like I miss a lot of school My family/carers are not interested in me doing well at school My friends are not interested in learning - and make fun of people who try hard I have no interests (sports/artistic etc) in which I am improving my ability What highest wellbeing might look like I go to school all the time and try to learn as well as I can My family/carers make sure I am supported to get to school and do well there. My friends try hard and are pleased when I do well I do have interests (sports/artistic etc) in which I am improving my ability
9
Develop and Implement Not just a tool – also a set of practices Used in multi-disciplinary forums CPMs, LAAC reviews, Case Conferences, etc Significances being understood Imaginative practice being shared
10
Next steps Implement in 3 or 4 school clusters (owned by local managers across services) – This is a big step ! Working group (with 3 rd sector reps) to continue: – support for and collation of further learning – Gathering findings together – Reporting to/advising Children’s Partnership Integrate into paperwork – so it is not an “extra” Build into Getting it Right training
