Werner Kilb Preparatory meeting SFB 07. Sept. 2012 Influence between motor and sensory cortex during whisking Influence of whisking-related activity in the motor cortex on sensory processing in the somatosensory cortex of rodents Werner Kilb Institut für Physiologie und Pathophysiologie Universitätsmedizin Mainz

Werner Kilb Preparatory meeting SFB 07. Sept. 2012 Influence between motor and sensory cortex during whisking Central question Voltage-sensitive dye Whole-cell recording Petersen (2007) Neuron 56:339 wM1 Modified from Diamond et al (2008) How does neuronal activity in the whisker-related motor cortex influence information processing in the somatosensory (barrel) cortex? b) What is the Contextual control? How does the somatosensory cortex process whisker-related information in the context of whisking-related activity in the motor cortex?

Werner Kilb Preparatory meeting SFB 07. Sept. 2012 Influence between motor and sensory cortex during whisking Short overview on planed experiments wM1 Modified from Diamond et al (2008) 1.) In-vivo recordings Stimulatory context - MEA-recordings (FP, MUA, single-units) (simultan. in S1 and wM1) - inter- and transcolumnar information flow/processing - repetitive spike patterns Interference with signal processing Silencing (Lidocain) at different levels of information processing Blocking motor outputs (d-Tubocur./Botulinumtoxin) Optogenetic activation/silencing

Werner Kilb Preparatory meeting SFB 07. Sept. 2012 Influence between motor and sensory cortex during whisking Short overview on planed experiments. wM1 Modified from Diamond et al (2008) 1.) In-vivo recordings - MEA-recordings (FP, MUA, single-units) (simultan. in S1 and wM1) - inter- and transcolumnar information flow/processing - repetitive spike patterns 2.) In-vitro recordings - motosensori slices and cortical slab preperations - influence of motorcortex activation on neuronal properties (E m, PSCs, APs, Resonance) in different neurons of the barrel field - effect of serotonin on neurons in the somatosensory cortex

Werner Kilb Preparatory meeting SFB 07. Sept. 2012 Influence between motor and sensory cortex during whisking Preliminary work Simultaneous recordings of sensorimotor interactions FP-recording

Werner Kilb Preparatory meeting SFB 07. Sept. 2012 Influence between motor and sensory cortex during whisking Preliminary work Methods to define/analyze information processing?

Werner Kilb Preparatory meeting SFB 07. Sept. 2012 Influence between motor and sensory cortex during whisking Integration into the CRC „Contextual control“ Direct link to two other projects investigating „active sensing“ - Torfi Sigurdsson „Neural Circuits Underlying Corollary Discharge in Mouse Auditory Cortex“ - Prof. Kössl „Context-dependence of cortical auditory time perception” May serve to give conceptual support (e.g. unit-activity underlying oscillatory events) to the (human) study regarding “spectrotemporal dynamics of feedforward and feedback processing in sensorimotor transformations“ (Prof. Kell). The analysis of our datasets will benefit from the expertise provided within this consortium applying for this CRC. In particular I plan collaborations with Prof. Wibral (Model free measures of information flow, dynamic causal modeling) Dr. G. Schneider (Information capacity of a single oscillatory cycle)
