Spanish Missions One of the reasons that Spain explored was GOD, or to spread their religion. After a period of exploration Spain set their focus on converting the Native Americans to Christianity, in part to make them more loyal subjects to the King of Spain. Missions were built along the coasts of Florida and Georgia. Missions were built in the villages of important chiefs.

Spanish Missions There were benefits in having these missions. Natives were instruction in religion. The young were taught to read and write. Adults learned to plant new crops. Trade happened between the Natives and the Spanish Colonists. It actually helped to improve the relationships between natives and the Spanish.

Spanish Missions There were two major areas of Spanish missions. Mocama: It went from the St Marys River to the Altamaha River. Guale: It went from the Altamaha to Savannah River.

End of Spanish Missions The end of the Spanish Missions came with the Juanillo Rebellion. Several Spanish Friars (religious leaders) were killed when an angry chief lead a rebellion against them.

Barter Economy Barter economy is the oldest economic system. A barter economy is based around trade. You give what you have for what you need. There is usually no money involved in a barter system. This system worked with groups who had no currency or different types of currency.
