Definition of Order of Operations It can also be called “Operator Precedence” The Order of Operations is a rule used to clarify which mathematical procedure should be performed first when solving a problem such as the one provided ( 6 + 3 )^2 – 8 x 2 / 2 (9)^2 – 8 x 2 / 2 81 – 8 x 2 / 2 81 – 16 / 2 81 – 8 = 73 Now, click the arrow to return to the main menu Previous Slide

Parenthesis P = Parenthesis The P in “Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally” or PEMDAS, stands for parenthesis Therefore, when you are given a problem the first thing you will look for is if there are any parenthesis in your given problem and solve for that first. So, for this problem … ( 6 + 3 )^2 – 8 x 2 / 4 The next line would look like this… (9)^2 – 8 x 2 / 4 Now, click the arrow to return to the main menu Previous Slide
6
Exponents E = Exponents The E in “Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally” or PEMDAS, stands for exponents Therefore, the next step when you are given a problem is to check for any exponents and solve for them next So, for this problem … ( 6 + 3 )^2 – 8 x 2 / 4 (9)^2 – 8 x 2 / 4 The following line would be … 81 – 8 x 2 / 4 Now, click the arrow to return to the main menu Previous Slide

Multiplication M = Multiplication The M in “Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally” or PEMDAS, stands for multiplication Therefore, the next step when you have a problem is to check for any multiplication. Also, remember that the M and the D in PEMDAS are seen as a pair. So, if you have both multiplication and division in your problem simply work from left to right in your problem to solve. So, for this problem … ( 6 + 3 )^2 – 8 x 2 / 4 (9)^2 – 8 x 2 / 4 81 – 8 x 2 / 4 The following line would be … 81 – 16 / 4 Now, click the arrow to return to the main menu Previous Slide

Division D = Division The D in “Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally” or PEMDAS, stands for division Therefore, the next thing you will look for when solving your problem is if there is any division that needs to be solved for So, for this problem … ( 6 + 3 )^2 – 8 x 2 / 4 (9)^2 – 8 x 2 / 4 81 – 8 x 2 / 4 81 – 16 / 4 The next line would look like this… 81 – 4 Now, click the arrow to return to the main menu Previous Slide

Addition A = Addition The A in “Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally” or PEMDAS, stands for addition Therefore, the next thing you will look for in your problem is for any addition. However, as I mentioned on a pervious slide with multiplication and division being seen as a pair and working from left to right, the same goes with addition and subtraction. So, for this problem … ( 6 + 3 )^2 – 8 x 2 / 4 (9)^2 – 8 x 2 / 4 81 – 8 x 2 / 4 81 – 16 / 4 81 – 4 However, you will notice in this problem there is no addition. So, when this happens simply move onto the next step in PEMDAS Previous Slide
10
Subtraction S = Subtraction The S in “Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally” or PEMDAS, stands for subtraction The last and final step in PEMDAS is subtraction. So, when you are solving a problem check for any subtraction that needs to be completed So, for this problem … ( 6 + 3 )^2 – 8 x 2 / 4 (9)^2 – 8 x 2 / 4 81 – 8 x 2 / 4 81 – 16 / 4 81 – 4 The final step & answer is … = 77 Now, click the arrow to return to the main menu Previous Slide

Here is an extra problem for you to review… Use the Order of Operations to solve this problem Parenthesis 63 – 5 + (8-2)^2 x 3 / 2 Exponents 63 – 5 + (6)^2 x 3 / 2 Multiplication 63 – 5 + 36 x 3 / 2 Division 63 – 5 + 108 / 2 Subtraction (Work from left to right) 63 – 5 + 54 Addition 58 +54 Final Answer = 112 Previous Slide

Now a problem for you to try! Use the Order of Operations to solve… 7 x ( 9 – 3) + 2 – 4^2 A.) 26 B.) 14 C.) 28 D.) 56

Oops, sorry 26 is not the correct answer. I think you made a little mistake… Remember your order of operations P = Parenthesis E = Exponents M = Multiplication D = Division A = Addition S = Subtraction Remember when you have multiplication & division and addition & subtraction, you work from left to right Please click on the back arrow to try again!
