A collection of different tissues joined together to perform a specific function What is an organ? What is an organ system? A collection of organs who work together to reach a main goal

What is the Muscular System? The muscular system is an organ system that contains skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscles. It allows movement for the body, it helps maintain body shape, and it helps the blood move throughout the body.

Types of Muscle There are 3 types of muscles in our body. They all serve a different purpose and are all located in different organs.

Voluntary: muscle whose action is normally controlled by an individual. For example, you can decide what you want to move in the body and its controllable, such as your arms or legs. Involuntary: muscle whose action lies outside of the individual's control. For example, an involuntary muscle can’t be controlled, it functions by itself. Involuntary vs Voluntary

Skeletal Muscle Skeletal Muscle: Type of muscle tissue that is found attached to bones, is involuntary, and has many striations. ●Attached to bones ●Voluntary ●Many striations ●Allows bone movement

Smooth Muscle Smooth Muscle: Type of muscle tissue that is found in organs, is involuntary, and has no striations. ●Found in organs ●Involuntary ●No striations ●Helps with digestion

Cardiac Muscle Cardiac Muscle: Type of muscle tissue that is found inside the heart, is involuntary, and has some striations. ●Found in heart ●Involuntary ●Some striations ●Keeps blood inside heart

Muscle Functions ●Allows movement ●Protects organs ●Maintains body structure ●Maintains good posture ●Allows for flexibility ●Makes pumping of the blood easier

Striation: A series of ridges on a muscle fiber Myosin: A protein that conducts movement in muscle cells making muscle fibers move Fibers: The small segments that make up muscle tissue What causes movement?

Muscles in the Body

What are the functions of the muscular system? How many types of muscle tissue are there? 3 types Does the Cardiac muscle have striations? some striations Do smooth muscles have striations? none What do skeletal muscles attach to? bones What are fibers? individual segments that make up muscle tissue Muscular system works with what other organ systems? skeletal Which types of muscles are voluntary? which are not? the skeletal muscle is the only voluntary muscle. The smooth and cardiac muscles are involuntary How is the cardiac muscle different from the skeletal muscle? the cardiac muscle is found in the heart while the skeletal muscle is found attached to bones. Also each muscle has a different shape and function How does shape play an important role in the function of muscles? the shape of each muscle helps that specific muscle perform its task. For example, the cardiac muscle is branch shape because it has to hold in liquid Checks for Understanding
