1 1 Peter Class Schedule

2 13 Who is there to harm you if you prove zealous for what is good? 14 But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed. AND DO NOT FEAR THEIR INTIMIDATION, AND DO NOT BE TROUBLED, 15 but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence; 16 and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame. 17 For it is better, if God should will it so, that you suffer for doing what is right rather than for doing what is wrong.

4 13 Who is there to harm you if you prove zealous for what is good? The source of what is good is God Christ’s work on the cross enables us to be people zealous for good deeds As we abide/walk in Him even the harm that happens can viewed for our growth and proof of our faith 14 But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed. AND DO NOT FEAR THEIR INTIMIDATION, AND DO NOT BE TROUBLED, When you suffer for doing good you are blessed Do not be fearful of the ones who cause you to fear Do not be become troubled or agitated Review from last week

5 15 but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence; but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts sanctify – set apart but set apart Christ as Lord in your hearts (Wuest) Is this talking about our position or our condition? see 1 Cor 1:2 and Gal 2:20 about our position also in 1 Peter 1:3 Christ is called “our Lord Jesus Christ” What are other expressions in Scripture for sanctify?

6 15 but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence; always being ready to make a defense ready - hetoimos – prepared, ready for anything see Titus 3:1 defense - apologia - to give an answer or speech in defense of oneself Note: Paul was appointed for defense of the gospel – see Phil 1:16 Why should this defense follow setting apart Christ in our hearts?

7 15 but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence; to everyone who asks you to give an account (lit: a word) to everyone who asks you for a logical explanation (Wuest) What does this verse tell us about the timing of our defense? for “the hope” that is in you see Col 1:27, 1 Peter 1:3, Titus 2:13

8 15 but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence; yet with gentleness and reverence gentleness - it is an inwrought grace of the soul, and the expressions of it are primarily toward God – see 2 Cor 10:11 reverence - phobos - reverential fear 1 Peter 1:17 If you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each one's work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth;

9 16 and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame. and keep a good conscience having a conscience unimpaired (Wuest) conscience - a knowing of oneself, consciousness; and hence conscience - that faculty of the soul which distinguishes between right and wrong and prompts one to choose the former and avoid the latter see 1 Tim 1:5, 1:19, 1 Tim 3:9 and 2 Tim 1:3

10 16 and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame. so that in the thing in which you are slandered so that – with a purpose that (of a good conscience) slandered - to speak against, to speak evil of see James 4:11 those who revile your good behavior in Christ revile – to misuse, treat despitefully, insult - in the sense of to accuse falsely – see Luke 6:28

11 16 and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame. will be put to shame (lit: may be humiliated) shame - strengthened form of “to put to shame” see 1 Cor 1:27 parallel passages to verse 16 1 Peter 2:12 Keep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles, so that in the thing in which they slander you as evildoers, they may because of your good deeds, as they observe them, glorify God in the day of visitation. --- 15 For such is the will of God that by doing right you may silence the ignorance of foolish men.

12 17 For it is better, if God should will it so, that you suffer for doing what is right rather than for doing what is wrong. For [it is] better to suffer [unjustly] for doing right, if that should be God's will, than to suffer [justly] for doing wrong. (Amplified) parallel passage: 1 Peter 2:20 For what credit is there if, when you sin and are harshly treated, you endure it with patience? But if when you do what is right and suffer for it you patiently endure it, this finds favor with God. also see 1 Peter 4:15
