SWBAT…change numbers from scientific notation to standard notation and vice versa. Agenda 1. Warm-up (5 min) 2. Cornell notes on scientific notation (25 min) 3. OYO Problems (20 min) Warm-Up 1. What do you know about scientific notation? 2. Why do we use scientific notation? 3. Where is the scientific notation button on your calculator? 4. 10 3 = HW: HW#1: Scientific Notation and Test Corrections! Thursday, 10/8/09

Announcements Test corrections are due tomorrow (1/2 pts back on your test) I am here after school today! You may use your calculators! When you come to class, place your binder, notebook, homework, pencil and calculator on desk Need calculators: Starting Tuesday, I will start deducting 5 pts if you do not have calculators out on your desk

Scientific Notation A method for expressing and working with, very large or very small numbers Short hand method for writing numbers Numbers in scientific notation are made up of three parts:  Coefficient  Base  Exponent 5.67 x 10 3 coefficient base exponent

Following conditions must be true 1. The coefficient’s decimal must be after the first non-zero number 2. The base must be 10 3. The exponent shows the number of decimal places that the decimal needs to be moved - Positive exponent = decimal is moved to the left - Negative exponent = decimal is moved to the right

Change to scientific notation Ex 1: 56,700 Remember, the decimal is at the end of the final zero The coefficient’s decimal is after the 5 The coefficient will then read 5.67 The decimal will move 4 places to the left, making the exponent equal to 4. Answer equals 5.67 x 10 4

Change to scientific notation Ex 2: 194 (HW Problem #6) Remember, the decimal is at the end of the four The coefficient decimal is after the 1 The coefficient will then read 1.94 The decimal will move 2 places to the left, making the exponent equal to 2. Answer equals 1.94 x 10 2

Change to scientific notation Ex 3: 0.0000159 (HW Problem #9) The coefficient’s decimal is after the 1 The coefficient will then read 1.59 The decimal will move 5 places to the right, making the exponent equal to -5. Answer equals 1.59 x 10 -5

Change to standard notation Ex 1: 5.67 x 10 3 = The exponent tells us to move the decimal three places to the right from where it’s currently at Remember, 10 3 = 10 * 10 * 10 = 1,000 So, 5.67 x 1,000 = 5,670 5,670

Change to standard notation Ex 2: 7 x 10 4 (HW Problem #10) The exponent tells us to move the decimal four places to the right from where it’s currently at So, 7 x 10 4 = 70,000

Change to standard notation Ex 3: 5.3 x 10 -4 The exponent tells us to move the decimal four places to the left (from where it’s currently at) so, 5.3 x 10 -4 = 0.00053

Change to standard notation Ex 4: 42 x 10 4 = The exponent tells us to move the decimal four places to the right (from where it’s currently at) So, 42 x 1 0 4 = 420,000

What do you notice about the exponents and the number? AHA!

On Your Own (OYO) Problems Change to scientific notation 1) 195 2) 0.00067 3) 709,000,000 Change to standard notation: 1) 7 x 10 3 2) 80 x 10 -5 3) 31.3 x 10 6

On Your Own (OYO) Problems Change to scientific notation 1) 195 = 1.95 x 10 2 2) 0.00067 = 6.7 x 10 -4 3) 709,000,000 = 7.09 x 10 8 Change to standard notation: 1) 7 x 10 3 = 7,000 2) 80 x 10 -5 = 0.00080 = 0.0008 3) 31.3 x 10 6 = 31,300,000

Highlight the five most important words from your notes. Complete a 3 or 4 sentence summary of what you wrote in your notes using your highlighted words
