Librarians…

Get your double step! Common mistakes: Do not run your own library Avoid doing what others did before you Make sure people can read what you have produced Simple solution: Consult the Library! Submit your own documents to CDS The service is there for everyone – not just physicists …

What can we do for you? Lend you books – new books every week, and now electronic pdf versions of books (ebooks) Get you any book from any library Sell you books and software via the bookshop Offer access to e-journals and back files Offer access to electronic dictionaries and encyclopedias Lend you standards or purchase them on your behalf Offer access to databases including back files Offer CERN multimedia items : Press cuttings, Photos, Exhibition objects Use of a scan-to-email machine … Everything is free! And the library is open all day and all night and online at http://library.cern.ch/ http://library.cern.ch/

What can you do for us? Behave civilized … –Too many books are already missing. We operate openly but on trust Share your information –Submit your documents (reports / conference papers / articles etc) to CERN Document Server http://cdsweb.cern.ch/ (use the submit button and “CERN Open Document” for most of your submissions) http://cdsweb.cern.ch/ –Donate books you no longer need Make your old colleagues behave like you –Many are often not even aware of the service

The scientific information flow

The changing publishing model See the DG’s slides on open accessDG’s slides on open access The LHC-era will see a publishing reform –Already discussions are taking place to fund a new publishing model for particle physics and ensure open access –www.scoap3.orgwww.scoap3.org –Other domains (engineering/computing) should follow suit – the way to start is to self-archive your papers.

Open Access where possible In the meantime you can help to ensure people can read your work by self-archiving CERN rules say you should submit your documents to CDS. If not, even CERN staff might not have access to your publication –50 years old CERN reports can still not be scanned because the publisher owns the copyright… Self-archive your own copy of your articles (preprints/conference submissions etc) in CDS http://cdsweb.cern.ch/ Use the submit button and “CERN Open Document” for most of your submissionshttp://cdsweb.cern.ch/
