Rhamnaceae 51-55 genera 900 species Most common in warmer climates Plants are synoecious Fruit is mostly drupe, berry, or schizocarpic capsule Schizocarpic capsule – fruit derived from a compound ovary which breaks apart into one-carpellate segments

Dwarf alder (Rhamnus alnifolia) A low spreading shrub Leaves are alternate, elliptic Flowers are 3mm across with 5 yellow- green, petal-like, sepals Fruit are red to black fleshy berries
