Imperialism When a powerful nation takes political, economic, and cultural control over another nation. For example, Africa was carved up by European countries so to gain raw materials for industrialization.

By the late 1890's, the desire of big business for foreign markets and sources of raw materials encouraged territorial expansion overseas.

Colony An area in which a foreign nation gained control over a region by settlement or conquest. For example, Great Britain controlled and settled the Thirteen American Colonies.

Economic Motives The Industrial Revolution created an insatiable demand for raw materials and new markets. Nationalism European nations wanted to demonstrate their power and prestige to the world. Balance of Power European nations were forced to acquire new colonies to achieve a balance with their neighbors and competitors. White Man's Burden The Europeans’ sense of superiority made them feel obligated to “civilize the heathen savages” they encountered.
