M4G1 Students will define and identify the characteristics of geometric figures through examination and construction. M4G2 Students will understand fundamental solid figures.

Opening

 The word polygon means “many angles”  A two dimensional object  A closed figure

 Made up of three or more straight line segments  There are exactly two sides that meet at a vertex  The sides do not cross each other

Side: One of the line segments that make up a polygon. Vertex: point where two sides meet.

Regular Polygon: all sides have equal length and all the angles have equal measure.

Triangle: a three sided polygon

Quadrilateral: a four sided polygon. A quadrilateral that is a regular polygon is called a square.

Pentagon: a five sided polygon

Hexagon: a six sided polygon

A heptagon has seven sides.

Octagon: an eight sided polygon

Decagon: a ten sided polygon

Triangle eight sides Heptagon three sides Octagonseven sides Work Session

Regular or Irregular 1. 2. 3.

Practice on Your Own!

Closing: How many sides does each polygon have? ______________ Do all polygons look the same? _____________ Can I know the name of a shape just by looking at it? ______________________
