ASCL Workshop— Boulder, CO Fundamental Concepts for Essential Principal: Atmosphere constantly interacts with other components of the Earth system Breakout session: 8a Recorder: Cindy Hamen Reporter: Mark Johnsson
2
ASCL Workshop— Boulder, CO Suggested merger: ► Suggested rewording in order to merge EP 3 and 5. ► Atmosphere constantly interacts with other components of the Earth system, transferring matter and energy.
3
ASCL Workshop— Boulder, CO Fundamental Concept #1 ► The atmospheric processes interact and transfer energy and matter with other components of the Earth system such as: living things, water, ice, and land. ► Atmosphere processes interact with the other components of the Earth system via both energy and matter transfer such as: living things, water, ice, and land. G1. Gases are exchanged with the other spheres G2. Water is exchanged with the other spheres G3. Energy is exchanged with the other spheres
4
ASCL Workshop— Boulder, CO Fundamental Concept #2 ► Prediction of atmospheric phenomena requires knowledge/understanding of the components and the interaction of components of the system. ► The group did not understand this enough to suggest deletion. Would like further clarification.
5
ASCL Workshop— Boulder, CO Fundamental Concept #3 Interactions of components of the Earth’s system produce (emergent) phenomena unique to the system. For example, abrupt climate change (another example is ozone hole) Interactions and feedbacks between components of the Earth’s system result in changes to the Earth system and produce (emergent) phenomena unique to the system.
6
ASCL Workshop— Boulder, CO Fundamental Concept #4 ► Sustainability requires understanding and reaction to the system. The planet cannot be maintained/sustained without humans changing their interactions with the Earth system. ► Move to EP 7, new wording: Sustainability requires knowledge of and sensitivity to all components of the Earth system.
7
ASCL Workshop— Boulder, CO Fundamental Concept #5 ► Within the atmosphere there are biogeochemical cycles which vary across timescales. ► Biogeochemical cycles are fundamental aspects of the Earth system and vary across time and space scales. Goddard “The atmosphere carries biomolecules.” move to EP3
8
ASCL Workshop— Boulder, CO Fundamental Concept #6 ► Historical interactions between the atmosphere and other systems affect current behavior of the atmosphere. ► Past interactions among the atmosphere and other components of the Earth system can have long-term effects on the Earth system.
