Commas and Numbers Rule Use a comma every three digits after the number 999. Commas are not used in long numbers such as UPC or Serial numbers. 500 5,000 5,000,000 50,000,000 500,000,000

Commas and Dates Rule Use commas to separate the month and date from the year. Use a comma after the year. Example I was born on January 1, 1970, just after New Year’s Eve!

Commas and People Rule Use a comma to surround the person being directly addressed in a sentence Example Good Morning, Madeline, it’s a great day today!

Commas and People Rule Use commas to set off a person’s degree or professional title following their name. Example Dr. Florence Smith, PhD, will teach seven classes this semester.

Use a comma after the state. **Note: If the state is abbreviated, a comma is unnecessary** Example Did you read about the Occupy Wall Street protests in Baltimore, Maryland, last week?
