2 Today’s Objective Students will be able to use thematic maps to describe the human and physical characteristics of an area. There will be 13 questions on this objective on your next quiz, 9/21. We will be reading human and physical thematic maps throughout this year in social studies.

5 Current Events Turn to page one of your Current Events section and write down YOUR OPINION about today’s current event:  This past weekend, Baltimore hosted the Grand Prix  An estimated 150,000 to 160,000 people came to watch the race over the three-day weekend  The Grand Prix will take place in Baltimore every year around Labor Day weekend Do you think it was a good thing or bad thing for Baltimore to host the Grand Prix? When you are done writing your opinion, raise your hand to get it stamped by Mr. Baluch. Then cross it off your To-Do list.

6 Current Events Example  It was a good thing that Baltimore hosted the Grand Prix, because  It attracted people to Baltimore, increasing business here  It improved Baltimore’s image to people around the country  It increased Baltimore’s status as a major city OR  It was a bad thing that Baltimore hosted the Grand Prix, because  It is very expensive for the city to set up and clean up for the Grand Prix  The Grand Prix causes a lot of traffic and construction  Having the Grand Prix can cause damage to streets and buildings

10 Group Work: Reading a Map of Hershey Park  Either with your group or on your own, answer the following questions using the map of Hershey Park provided by Mr. Baluch.  Do NOT write on the map!  When you are done, raise your hand in order to get your work stamped for credit. Then cross it off your To-Do list. You have 15 minutes.

11 Group Work: Creating a Day Plan  Either with your group or on your own create a day plan for your pretend cousin using the map and the index on the back of the map.  Your pretend cousin..  Is 57 inches tall  Can handle rides up to a 4 on the ride rating system  Likes eating hot dogs and ice cream  Using this information, create a plan that…  Includes at least one ride from each area of the park  Includes one place to eat lunch and one place to have a snack  Includes at least 7 rides  When you are done, raise your hand in order to get your work stamped for credit. Then cross it off your To-Do list. You have 15 minutes.
