Who was Frederick Douglass?
Born as a slave in 1818 Lived in Baltimore, Maryland Learned to read by giving poor boys pieces of bread Frederick was able to read by age 12 He read about slavery and freedom Because of reading, he wanted to be free

Owner sent him to work in the Baltimore Harbor He escaped to freedom on Sept. 3, 1838 on a train The train took him to New York Douglass decided to live in New Bedford Massachusetts. He became an abolitionist and spoke out against slavery

Douglass began giving antislavery speeches Many people thought he was too smart to have been a slave He wrote a book called Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass an American Slave He traveled to Great Britain where he gave speeches for 2 years His friends bought his freedom and he came back to the U.S. a free man

Who was Frederick Douglass?
When he returned to the U.S., he started a newspaper called The North Star that had articles speaking against slavery. Douglass also spoke out for women’s rights to vote. Douglass was friends with a woman named Susan B. Anthony who also believed in rights for women.

Who was Frederick Douglass?
He hid slaves in his house and was part of the Underground Railroad. Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860. Lincoln was against slavery. Some states did not want slavery to end, so they formed the Confederacy. The states that wanted slavery to end were called the Union. In 1861, a war started between the Confederacy and the Union.

Who was Frederick Douglass?
Abraham Lincoln declared that all slaves were free during the war. This was called the Emancipation Proclamation. Douglass worked with Lincoln to help free the slaves. Even though the slaves were free, they still weren’t treated fairly. Douglass worked hard to get equal rights for ex- slaves and women.
