Dance is defined as an artistic form of non-verbal communication involving movement of the body usually rhythmic and to music. It is believed dance originated in France with The Royal Academy of Ballet in which King Louis the XIV was in reign. Girls were not allowed to dance so the earliest ballets were men in tights. The Sugarplum Fairy Dance (Tchaikovsky)

In the early twentieth century, a new era of dance known as the American Modern Dance Movement, evolved with an unlimited range of gestures expressing feelings of joy, passion, and fear using the body as an instrument. Martha Graham was one of the leading dancers and choreographers of the movement. Music of Modern Dance

Jazz originated at the close of the nineteenth century after the end of World war I and the beginning of a social revolution. Dancing became more informal and “flappers” and “the lost generation” were some of the names of this ethnic rainbow of people emerging in seamy dance halls. It is said that Jazz dance originated from African American Vernacular dance with roots in Caribbean style and movement. The birthplace of Jazz is said to have many origins in New Orleans, St. Louis, Memphis, and Kansas City just to name a few. New Orleans still claims to be an important center of Jazz music and dance today.

Some of the earliest forms of Tap dance were in the Minstrel shows and showboat routines of the late nineteenth century. This was a form of entertainment that consisted of theatrical slave dance. Tap is an American theatrical dance in which percussive footwork meets rhythmic patterns on the floor. The first tap shoes were wooden and later went on to become a soft sole leather shoe with an added metal plate or “tap”. Jimmy Doyle and Harland Dixon were some of the earliest tap “duo’s” to merge.

Hip-Hop is a form of street dance developed in the 1970’s by Latino and African Americans. There are a wide range of styles such as breaking, popping, and other freestyle movements associated with Hip-Hop music. This rhythmic funk style dance is used in studios, commercials, music videos, and choreography. While Hip-Hop dance may be a hobby for some, it is lifestyle and way to be physically active or competitive while earning a living professionally.
