A sentence can be used to make a statement, to ask a question, to make a request or give a command, or to show strong feelings.

3. Four Kinds of Sentences
Declarative
Makes a statement.
It always ends with a period.
EXAMPLES:
Funny stories are popular everywhere.
2. People from all cultures enjoy humor.
Interrogative
Ask a question.
It always ends with a question mark.
EXAMPLES:
1. Do you know any jokes?
2. Which one is your favorite?

4. Tells or asks someone to do something.
Imperative
Tells or asks someone to do something.
It usually ends with a period but may end with an exclamation point.
EXAMPLES:
Listen carefully.
2. Stop interrupting me!
Exclamatory
Shows strong feeling.
It always ends with an exclamation point.
EXAMPLES:
1. You’re really funny!
2. That joke is a lot older than I am!

5. Why It Matters in Writing
The four kinds of sentences enable you to express different feelings and attitudes in your writing. Notice the variety of sentence types in the following dialogue.
Mrs. Walker: What’s wrong?
I don’t understand.
Interrogative
Declarative
Lenore: I don’t want to read my story.
I also don’t want to go to Thunder Bay!
