6
Haiti vs The Dominican Republic What is the difference? Justice
7
We all have an interest in and an inherent sense of justice- and we know that we are accountable to someone.
8
The Real Question “Who are we ultimately accountable too?”
10
“What gives Jesus the authority to Judge us ?”
11
Because as God’s Son He possesses the divine nature (16- 23)
12
Whiteacre “The work Jesus sees the Father doing and the work he himself does is characterized by gratuitous love. But the opponents fail to recognize this divine love in Jesus and thereby show the depth of their alienation from God. Their rejection of Jesus, who reveals the Father, shows that they have never heard nor seen God (5:37), or else they would have recognized him in his Son”
13
John 5:16-23 “So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. 17 In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.” 18 For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.”
14
John 5:16-23 “19 Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed.”
15
John 5:16-23 “21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.”
16
I. Because as God’s Son He possesses the divine nature (16-23) A. He has the same divine nature as God.
17
Philippians 2:5-7 5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; 7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature[b] of a servant, being made in human likeness.”
18
I. Because as God’s Son He possesses the divine nature (16-23) A. He has the same divine nature as God. B. He only does what He sees the Father doing.
19
John 8:44 “You (Pharisees) belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”
20
I. Because as God’s Son He possesses the divine nature (16-23) A. He has the same divine nature as God. B. He only does what He sees the Father doing. C. He does what the Father does because He shares His nature.
21
Whiteacre “God's love for the world (3:16) leads him to send the Son so we may be able to share through the Spirit in the Father's love for the Son (16:27; 17:23). This eternal relationship is the source of Jesus' activity for it leads the Father to show the Son all he does. It is this act of love that moved Him to heal the crippled man.”

23
Colin Smith In every case the crime is precisely the same, but the severity of the crime is measured by the one against whom it is committed. What comes from sinning against God? Answer: Everlasting destruction.
25
What gives Jesus the authority to Judge us?
26
II. Because He has authority to grant eternal life. (24-27)
27
John 5:24-27 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life. 25 Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live.”
28
John 5:24-27 “26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.”
29
II. Because He has authority to grant eternal life. (24-27) A. The unity of the Father and the Son requires belief in both.

Dan Ariely “…most dishonesty happens among ordinary people who think of themselves as basically honest. But when added together, all this "little" dishonesty has a huge impact. Most of the problems faced by the human race are not rooted in the lives of outliers and psychopaths—life's big cheaters.”
36
Dan Ariely “Our problems are rooted in the lives of typical, ordinary people who find ways to rationalize their own bad behavior. In other words, we want to think of ourselves as honest people while enjoying the benefits of dishonesty but the truth says otherwise. “
37
Bill Murray "What stops [any of] us, is we're kind of really ugly if we look really hard. We're not who we think we are. We're not as wonderful as we think we are. It's a little bit of a shock … it's hard."

What gives Jesus the authority to Judge us?
40
III. Because man’s eternal fate is determined by their attitude towards Jesus. (28-30)
41
John 5:28-30 “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29 and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned. 30 By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.”
42
III. Because man’s eternal fate is determined by their attitude towards Jesus. (28-30) A. Everyone will someday face judgement (even those in their graves).

Bill Klem "Sonny, it ain't nothing 'till I call it."
50
APPLICATION People today may claim they are accountable to no one but themselves but inwardly they know of the ugliness inside. Hiding guilt is not the same of not having it.
51
APPLICATION The problem is that people do not want to face what is inside of them. Like Bill Murray they don’t like what they see and instead of facing it head on and seeing for what is they deny it, hide it, evade it or pass the blame.
52
APPLICATION People often deny the existence of God or Jesus because they do not want to face the judgement or the change it will demand of them. Yet, the divine paradox is that it is in facing your sin and accepting Jesus as Lord and King of your life that we find freedom and hope.
53
APPLICATION The opening line from a book titled “Nothing to Be Afraid Of” is "I don't believe in God, but I miss him." It is by the award-winning British writer, Julian Barnes. Barnes, who describes himself as an agnostic, writes, "I was never baptized, never sent to Sunday school. I have never been to a normal church service in my life." And yet this agnostic intellectual still feels haunted by the beauty of Christian art and music and by what he calls the "wake up call to morality."
54
APPLICATION God is a just and good God who is not influenced by the whims or men or able to be corrupted. We are granted hope by accepting who Jesus is and what He has done.
56
Our expressions of wrath and judgment are always flawed which is perhaps one reason why we're turned off by the wrath of God. Jesus alone can deliver perfect, unbiased, impartial justice on the earth. But that same Jesus offers grace and mercy for those who see their sin for what it really is and accept Him as both judge and adversary.
