1
Properties of Acids and Bases Students will Identify Acids, Bases and Salts and List Their Properties
2
What is an Acid? Acids are compounds that have an H ion connected to a negative ion. A good example would be HCl HCl is a H ion connected to a chloride ion. Another example would be HNO 3 H connected to NO 3
3
What is a Base? A base is a metal ion and the hydroxide ion (OH - ) Examples: NaOH is sodium hydroxide Ca(OH) 2 is calcium hydroxide Al(OH) 3 is aluminum hydroxide.
4
What is a Salt?
5
Identify the Acid and Base These Salts Came From
6
Ten Acids Page 100
7
List of Bases Using Page 86 as a guide H+H+H+H+ Li + K+K+K+K+ Mg 2+
8
Sort the Following Into Acids, Bases or Salts
9
Properties of Acids Taste sour React with metals Neutralize bases Turn litmus red Have a pH lower than 7
10
Properties Of Bases Taste Bitter Do not react with metals Change the color of indicators Neutralize Acids Have a pH greater than 7
11
How Acids and Bases React When an acid reacts with a base, they rearrange themselves to make water and a salt.
12
pH of water The pH of water is 7.0
