Chapter 1 What is HRM? Human Resources Management (HRM/HR) – Activities designed to provide for and coordinate the human resources of an organization. HR functions include: Planning & recruiting, training & development, compensation, safety, employee relations, research MAN 3301: Management of Human Resources

Chapter 1 What is HRM? Strategic HRM – The things HR must do to accomplish the Company’s goals. Three views of HR’s role in the organization: HR activities are not strategic but operational HR adapts its practices to fit the firm’s strategy HR is an equal partner in the planning process MAN 3301: Management of Human Resources

Chapter 1 The HR Manager Line vs. Staff & who has “authority” Authority - HR managers are usually staff managers in that they assist and advise line managers in accomplishing their goals. MAN 3301: Management of Human Resources

Chapter 1 The HR Manager Generalist: Performs many HR functions without specializing in any particular one. Specialist: Performs HR functions within one particular HR function. MAN 3301: Management of Human Resources

Chapter 1 Challenges for HR Managers Diversity in the Workforce – The US workforce is changing in these areas: Race and Ethnicity Age Gender The workforce is also changing in: Skills & Education “Attitudes” MAN 3301: Management of Human Resources

Chapter 1 Challenges for HR Managers Regulatory Changes – The legal environment of HR is fluid. Laws are added and amended. Courts interpret existing laws. Examples: Title VII and the ADA – a new protected class FMLA – paid leave? Reverse discrimination – guys serving wings? MAN 3301: Management of Human Resources
