Physics – The Beginning
2
What is Physics? Physics is a natural science that studies the behavior and structure of matter and energy. Physics is a natural science based on experiments, measurements, and mathematical analysis. Physics is a creative process that encourages the mind to curiously investigate the world.
3
Who are Physicists? Physicists fall into one of two camps: Theoretical - Propose and develop models and theories.
4
Who are Physicists? Experimental - Design and run experiments. Analyze the resulting data. There are many overlaps in the work of both types of physicists. Both groups must be aware of what the other is doing.
5
Genres of Study Astrophysics – Physics of the universe *(stars, galaxies, planet formation, black holes) Particle Physics – Discovering and learning about new particles *(Super Colliders, Higgs Boson…etc) Biophysics and Medical – Aspects of physics involved in the medical field *(radiation therapy, MRI) Solid State (Condensed Matter) – Physics of solid materials, particularly metals *(semi- conductors and superconductors)
6
Genres of Study Optical and Laser – Study and manipulation of electromagnetic waves*(light/sound waves) Sound or Acoustic – Physics of sound. Its production, movement, & interactions Nuclear – Physics of the nucleus of an atom and how to manipulate it *(fusion and fission) Involved in other fields such as geology, meteorology, oceanography, and seismology.
