2
Distributive Property a(b + c) = ab + ac
3
What does distribute mean? To distribute means to disperse or pass out. Think about a paper boy. What does he do? Right! He delivers, or distributes, a newspaper to everyone who signed up to receive it.
4
The Paper boy + OR (+)
5
With Numbers – Distributive Property works the same way! 3(4 + 5) 3(4) + 3(5) 12 + 15 27 3(4 + 5) 3(9) 27 Distributive Property v. Order of Operations
6
Wait, how do we do it? 5(10 + 12) Step 1: Distribute, or share, the 5 with all terms inside the parenthesis Step 2: Multiply Step 3: Combine like terms 5(10)+ 5(12) 60 110 50+
7
Practice with Numbers 1. 8(5 + 9) 8( ) + 8( ) + = 2. 3(6 + 7 – 2) 3( ) + 3( ) – 3( ) + – = 59 4072112 6 72 1821633
8
What about variables? Distributive Property works the same way! 5(x + 4) 20 5(x)+ 5(4) 5x + 20 Step 1: Distribute, or share, the 5 with all terms inside the parenthesis Step 2: Multiply Step 3: Combine like terms 5x+
9
Practice with Variables 1. 7(x + 4) 7( ) + 7( ) + = 2. 2(5x + 4 + 6) 2( ) + 2( ) + 2( ) + + = x4 7x287x + 28 5x 46 10x81210x + 20
