Who: Paula Bassett, Owner and Founder of Cadence Therapeutics with over a 30 year span of experience with both canine and equine. ◦ Professional Dog Trainer ◦ Certified Canine Training and Behavior Specialist ◦ American Kennel Club S.T.A.R. What is the end goal? The Canine Good Citizen evaluation/test consists of ten objectives. All items must be completed satisfactorily or the dog handler team does not pass. 10 Test items include: 1.Accepting a friendly stranger. 2.Sitting politely for petting. 3.Allowing basic grooming procedures. 4.Walking on a loose lead. 5.Walking through a crowd. 6.Sitting and lying down on command and staying in place. 7.Coming when called. 8.Reacting appropriately to another dog. 9.Reacting appropriately to distractions. 10.Calmly enduring supervised separation from the owner. If all ten objectives are met, the handler can then apply for a certificate and special dog tag if they wish from the AKC stating that the dog has earned the CGC. CGC is usually a pre-requisite for becoming a therapy dog.
