Northwest Territories Washington sends troops to defend land Two sets of troops lost to NA warriors led by Little Turtle Final troops led by “Mad Anthony” Wayne – defeated NA in the Battle of Fallen Timbers on August 20, 1794 British refused to help to avoid war Twelve tribes signed TREATY of GREENVILLE in 1795 – surrendered land (Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan)

Trouble in Backcountry Government tax on whiskey Small backcountry corn farmers distilled whiskey WHISKEY REBELLION in summer 1794 – burned tax collector’s home & threatened Pittsburgh General Henry Lee & Hamilton w/ 13,000 soldiers – put down the uprising Washington was able to show he could keep order in the new country

PROBLEMS ABROAD FRENCH REVOLUTION – 1789 – financial crisis caused people to rebel against government Executed King Louis XVI & Queen Marie Antoinette France declare war on Britain, Spain & Holland Hamilton not want to fight Britain – trade Jefferson want to support France – support liberty Washington declared US is neutral – not to fight British or French – April 1793

JAY’s TREATY of 1794 John Jay got British to agree to pay damages on US vessels that cargo been siezed British also left Ohio Valley – since US had beaten the NA in Battle of Fallen Timbers But some issues not solved so…

PINCKNEY’s TREATY of 1795 US won favorable terms with Spain! US can travel on MISSISSIPPI US can store goods at port of NEW ORLEANS 31 st Parallel – border between southern US and Spain’s Florida JAY’s Treaty & PINCKNEY’s Treaty gave Americans sense of security!!
