3 Telephone  Identify yourself, your location, and position  Ask – “May I help you?”  Be prepared to write down and take messages  Write down the information and read it back to the person on the phone for accuracy

4 Telephone  Relay the message as soon as possible  Allow the person who called to hang up first  Do not place the caller on “hold” unless absolutely necessary  If placed on “hold”, check back every minute to let them know they have not been forgotten

5 Telephone  Patient information is confidential, refer inquiries to the nurse caring for that patient  Non-personal information, may be allowed (such as room number and time of surgery) at some institutions  Know how to transfer a call if necessary  Restrict calls to business matters, not personal ones

6 Telephone  Helping a patient make a call  Inform the patient that you would like to assist in placing the call.  Place the patient in a comfortable position.  Obtain the number of the party the patient wishes to call.  Dial the number correctly.
