1
Atmospheric Basics SWBAT describe the composition of the atmosphere; compare and contrast the layers of atmosphere; identify the three methods of transferring energy throughout the atmosphere
2
Atmospheric Composition What gases is the atmosphere composed of? 99% nitrogen and oxygen 1% argon, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, water vapor, and other gases What are the two key gases in the atmosphere? Water vapor and carbon dioxide. These two gases affect how much energy the atmosphere absorbs.
3
Atmospheric Composition Ozone A gas formed by the addition of a third oxygen atom to an oxygen molecule.
4
Structure of the Atmosphere Troposphere Layer closest to Earth’s surface It contains most of the mass of the atmosphere, including water vapor This layer is where weather takes place and air pollution collects Stratosphere A layer made up primarily of concentrated ozone. It absorbs ultraviolet radiation
5
Structure of the Atmosphere Mesosphere Located above the stratosphere There is no concentrated ozone The temperature drops here Thermosphere Contains only minute portions of the atmosphere’s mass Exosphere Outermost layer of Earth’s atmosphere Light gases are found here
6
In groups of 2 or 3 Sketch a cross section of atmosphere labeling all layers and distances they start and end, also include a description of each layer, and the temperature range of each.
7
3 Ways the Sun’s Energy is Transferred Radiation Transfer of energy through space by visible light, ultraviolet radiation and other forms of electromagnetic waves Conduction Transfer of energy that occurs when molecules collide Convection Transfer of energy by the flow of a heated substance
8
With a partner Complete assessment questions 1-4 on page 277. Remember to answer in complete sentences and restate the question in your answer. If you don’t complete this in class, finish it for homework.
9
On your own Research some ways to stop or reduce the damage to the ozone layer. Create a pamphlet explaining what the ozone layer is, how it helps us, what destroys it, and how we can prevent its descruction.
