Introduction to Naviance and Learning Styles Presented by the Guidance Department 7 th Grade Science Classes

2 What is Naviance? Naviance is a comprehensive online program created to assist middle and high school students (and parents) with academic, career, and college planning.

3 Overview of Naviance at RDMS: Middle School students have access to The Learning Styles Inventory ( 7 th grade ) and The Career Key (8 th grade) in Naviance. You can uncover valuable information about yourself as a student, which will be helpful to you now and in the future. (Today we’ll discuss Learning Styles & you’ll receive a Naviance account.)

How Else is Naviance Used? Plan your courses Build your resume (organize extracurricular activities, sports, work experience, volunteering, awards, courses) Complete the college application process Search for colleges Apply to colleges Obtain teacher recommendations for college applications 4

Naviance at RDMS: Learning Styles Discovering your Learning Style will allow you to reach your maximum potential as a student A person’s Learning Style includes over 18 areas. This includes your preferences of: Temperature, light, sound, food, working with others, working alone, how you receive information and produce information 5

Naviance at RDMS: Learning Styles The Naviance Learning Styles Inventory analyzes all of these 18+ areas The four most commonly known Learning Styles include: Auditory Visual Kinesthetic Tactile IT’S POSSIBLE TO HAVE MORE THAN 1 LEARNING STYLE!!! 6

Learning Styles Auditory learners: Prefer information that is heard or spoken Like to use audiotapes, group discussions, lectures, talking through things with other people, tutorials (online Math book) Visual learners: Prefer information in the form of pictures and graphic images Like to use charts, diagrams, pictures, shapes, highlighters, graphic organizers, & colorful designs 7

Learning Styles Kinesthetic learners: Prefer to experience and practice information Like to use real-life examples, scenarios, videos of “real” things, field trips, lab experiments, exhibits (ex: Art trip to MOMA), using your 5 senses, demonstrating the lesson Tactile learners: Prefer to touch and feel as they learn information Like to engage in hands on activities 8

Your Naviance Account Your Naviance account is private! All results are only viewed by you, your parents and your guidance counselor Your account stays with you throughout high school Be sure to use a password you will remember (most students use the same password as your school email account) You can put your account information in a safe place (Y drive/USB memory stick) 9

Go to www.connection.naviance.com/rdrmswww.connection.naviance.com/rdrms Click on “I need to register” Type in registration code on the next page and click “Register” Use River Dell email (riverdellj21@student.riverdell.org)riverdellj21@student.riverdell.org Type in password (at least 6 characters)- case sensitive Check the box that says “I accept” Complete registration Logging Into Naviance
