What is the difference? Some reviewers may just care more Might read references Might redo analyses Might provide extensive cites Might consult with others

My procedure: One read through with comments as you go Form overall opinion Another thorough read through, solidify opinion and comments Get others opinions or read any references necessary Write review Then do evaluation; lastly deciding on recommendation

The job of the reviewer is to look for what? Are the questions interesting and to whom? Does it make enough of a contribution? Are the conceptual ideas/framework strong enough? Is the methodology flawed? Does the writing and presentation carry the story?

Critical characteristics for outstanding reviewers: Able to recognize potential contribution Willingness to carefully review Possess excellent conceptual and analytical skills In-depth and Up-to-date knowledge of subject matter Positive outlook aimed at saving rather than rejecting articles

How to be a good reviewer? Get your reviews in promptly—don’t be late Don’t make promises you can’t keep Be ethical—don’t use ideas, don’t reject because it doesn’t cite your work Be thorough/not sloppy

How to be a good reviewer, cont. Don’t be insulting or nasty Don’t be sensitive when you get the responses back Don’t be obtuse Don’t always go for the same solution—more data please!

When and how to get into reviewing When in your career should you start reviewing and how do you go about getting those first reviews? How can you get on editorial review boards? How much reviewing should you do? When are you doing too much?

When, why and how do you say no? When would you say no? What if you recognize the manuscript? What if the author is a good friend? How about an enemy? What if you have reviewed the paper as a service to a colleague already? What if you reviewed it for another journal?
