2 Why should we read???  To learn new things.  To become a better reader.  It’s FUN!!!  Can you think of any other reasons???

3 How should we read? 3 Ways  Read and talk about the pictures.  Read the words.  Retell a book you’ve already read.  You will be thinking, talking to yourself and making meaning no matter which way you choose!

4 What should reading to yourself look, sound and feel like?  Students will…

5 Read the whole time  This means you don’t stop to talk to friends or to do anything else.  The entire time should be spent reading!

6 Stay in one spot.  Pick a spot in the room that will work best for YOU.  Pick a place that is comfortable, and free from distractions!

7 Read quietly.  Are you allowed to read out loud during Read to Self?  Of course! Just make sure that you whisper read so you don’t disturb anyone around you.  Don’t talk to others during this time.

8 Work on stamina.  What’s stamina?  Stamina is the energy to do something for a longer amount of time. A good synonym is endurance.  If you are a runner and can only run for a few minutes, you don’t have very much stamina. If you can run a whole marathon (26.2 miles!!!) you have great stamina!

9 Stamina, continued  Readers need stamina so your brains can keep reading for a longer amount of time.  You’ll start out reading for a short time, and work your way up to a longer time.  It’s like exercise for your brain!!!

10 Get started right away  Once you have your book and your reading spot, get started!!!

11 What will the teacher be doing?  Working with groups of students.  Listening to children read.  Helping students with reading.

12 Now it’s time to practice!  You know why you should read, 3 ways to read a book, and what Read to Self should look like.  You’ll start out with about 3 minutes of reading time and work your way up
