Why should we read??? To learn new things. To become a better reader. It’s FUN!!! Can you think of any other reasons???
3
How should we read? 3 Ways Read and talk about the pictures. Read the words. Retell a book you’ve already read. You will be thinking, talking to yourself and making meaning no matter which way you choose!
4
What should reading to yourself look, sound and feel like? Students will…
5
Read the whole time This means you don’t stop to talk to friends or to do anything else. The entire time should be spent reading!
6
Stay in one spot. Pick a spot in the room that will work best for YOU. Pick a place that is comfortable, and free from distractions!
7
Read quietly. Are you allowed to read out loud during Read to Self? Of course! Just make sure that you whisper read so you don’t disturb anyone around you. Don’t talk to others during this time.
8
Work on stamina. What’s stamina? Stamina is the energy to do something for a longer amount of time. A good synonym is endurance. If you are a runner and can only run for a few minutes, you don’t have very much stamina. If you can run a whole marathon (26.2 miles!!!) you have great stamina!
9
Stamina, continued Readers need stamina so your brains can keep reading for a longer amount of time. You’ll start out reading for a short time, and work your way up to a longer time. It’s like exercise for your brain!!!
10
Get started right away Once you have your book and your reading spot, get started!!!
11
What will the teacher be doing? Working with groups of students. Listening to children read. Helping students with reading.
12
Now it’s time to practice! You know why you should read, 3 ways to read a book, and what Read to Self should look like. You’ll start out with about 3 minutes of reading time and work your way up
